Everything You Need to Know About Your Motocaddy ULTRA Lithium Battery

ULTRA Lithium - Power Up Your Game

Whether you've just unboxed your first Motocaddy electric buggy or you're looking to get the most out of a battery you've had for a while, this guide covers everything you need to know, from setting up correctly on day one to keeping your battery performing at its best for years to come.

Engineered as a reliable and smart power source, Motocaddy ULTRA Lithium batteries perform best when you know how to care for them.

Meet the Motocaddy ULTRA Lithium Battery

The 28V M-Series ULTRA is not just another golf battery; it represents the latest generation of Lithium Phosphate (LiFePO4) technology for electric golf. Here's what makes it different from what's come before.

Lithium Phosphate chemistry

The ULTRA features Lithium Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, known for its outstanding stability and thermal safety. This advanced technology outperforms older Lithium-ion options by resisting overheating and degradation, ensuring a longer life and enhanced safety for your peace of mind.

ULTRA vs lead-acid

Golfers upgrading from older lead-acid batteries will immediately feel the difference! The ULTRA Lithium battery is only 2.5 kg, significantly lighter than the typical 6 kg lead-acid option. That's over 60% lighter, which you'll appreciate every time you lift it out of your car!

Beyond weight, the ULTRA lasts up to five times longer than a lead-acid battery across its service life, and recharges in less than 5 hours (less than half the time of most lead-acid alternatives).

CLICK 'N' CONNECT® - no cables, no fuss

All current M-Series buggies feature CLICK 'N' CONNECT® batteries.

This patented cable-free battery connection system clicks the ULTRA battery into place securely and disconnects automatically when the buggy is folded. The battery also has a quick-access pop-up charging port, so you can top up without removing it from the buggy.

Note: The ULTRA battery is compatible with CLICK 'N' CONNECT® M-Series models (2024 onwards) only. It is not compatible with older cable-based Motocaddy buggies.

How the Battery Management System Works

Every Motocaddy ULTRA battery contains an Advanced Battery Management System (BMS). A built-in microprocessor acts as the battery's brain.

The BMS continuously:

  • Individually balances each cell inside the battery pack, ensuring no single cell discharges faster than the others. This allows the battery to deliver consistent, reliable power right up until it needs recharging
  • Prevents overcharging, cutting power to the charger once the battery reaches full capacity
  • Protects against deep discharge, cutting off the buggy's motor before the battery reaches a critically low state that could cause permanent cell damage

Quick tip: If a buggy suddenly stops on the course without warning, the BMS has most likely cut power to protect the battery. This is not a fault; it simply means the battery needs recharging. Engage free-wheel mode and push to the clubhouse.

The First Charge

The single most important step for any new Motocaddy ULTRA owner is the first charge. Get this right, and you're setting the battery up for long-term performance.

Your battery will arrive partially charged, enough to power the buggy, but not at full capacity. Before heading out for your first round, plug it in and give it a full charge of at least 5-8 hours.

This initial charge does two things:

  • Conditions all of the cells inside the battery pack evenly
  • Fully activates the BMS so it can begin managing discharge cycles correctly from day one

Important: Skipping the first charge won't damage the battery, but you won't start with full capacity, and conditioning works best before the first discharge. After that first charge, subsequent charges take less than 5 hours from flat to full.

Charging Your Battery

Reading the charger indicator

The ULTRA charger uses a two-light system that couldn't be simpler:

- Red light: Charging. Leave it plugged in.

- Green light: battery is fully charged. Switch off at the wall and unplug.

There is no benefit to leaving the battery plugged in after it reaches full charge. Once green, unplug.

The advantage of top-up charging

One genuine advantage of Lithium technology over lead-acid is top-up charging. Unlike lead-acid batteries, which need a full charge cycle each time, the ULTRA can be plugged in for any amount of time and will add capacity for as long as it's connected.

Playing back-to-back? Plug in between rounds. Even an hour on charge makes a difference.

Always recharge after every round

Make it a habit: plug in within 12 hours of finishing play, every time, even after just 9 holes. Leaving a Lithium battery sitting uncharged for extended periods causes the cells to lose capacity slowly over time.

Quick tip: Treat it like your phone. Plug it in as soon as you're home from the course, and you won't have to think about it.

Battery Settings on Your Buggy

All 2026 Motocaddy M-Series buggies using CLICK 'N' CONNECT® ULTRA Batteries feature a battery type setting accessible from the buggy handle. For the latest ULTRA Lithium battery, the correct setting is:

26V — Blue/Black charging connector

This setting should come pre-selected, so most customers won't need to change it. However, older chemistry lithium batteries (with grey/black connectors) also run on 28V; do not use the 28V setting with the new ULTRA (blue/black).

Important: If the battery meter on the buggy handle displays incorrectly (for example, showing full charge when the battery is low, or draining unusually fast), first check the battery setting on the handle. Confirming it is set to 26V (blue/black) resolves most battery display issues.

To check or change the setting

GPS Models: Navigate to the battery settings menu on the buggy handle display and confirm 26V / blue-black is selected.
Non-GPS Models: Press and hold the handle button, insert the battery pushing down the charging port, release the handle button, then press it once to change the setting from 1 to 2.

Protecting Your Battery

Never fully discharge

The Battery Management System (BMS) will cut off power automatically before the battery reaches a critically low state, but the goal is not to let it get that far. If the buggy starts moving noticeably slower than usual, switch to free-wheel mode immediately; don't wait for it to cut out.

Important: Don't run a Lithium battery all the way to zero, or close to it; it gradually reduces the total capacity it can hold. Keeping it above a low threshold regularly will meaningfully extend its working life.

Free-wheel mode

If the battery runs out mid-round, free-wheel mode allows you to push the buggy manually without resistance from the drive motor. Here's how:

  • Press the button in the spokes of each rear wheel
  • Pull the wheel outward until it sits in the outer groove on the axle; this disengages the drive motor. You will hear it click into place.
  • The buggy can now be pushed freely to the clubhouse
  • To re-engage drive after recharging, press the wheel spoke button again and push the wheel back inward to the inner groove; again, it should audibly click into position.

Storing Your Battery

Whether you're putting the buggy away at the end of the golf season or just won't be playing for a few weeks, proper storage makes a real difference to long-term battery health.

  • Always store the battery fully charged. Before packing it away, charge it to 100% first.
  • Don't leave it uncharged for more than twp months. If storing through the off-season, top it up every couple of months to keep the cells healthy.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Australian summers can be harsh, so avoid storing the buggy in a hot garage or car boot for extended periods.

Quick tip: A good end-of-season routine: charge to full, give the battery a top-up every 6–8 weeks through winter, and charge again before your first round back in spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What buggy models is the ULTRA Lithium battery compatible with?

The ULTRA Lithium battery is compatible with Motocaddy M-Series buggies featuring CLICK 'N' CONNECT® technology. This includes all 2026 M-Series models and compatible 2024 models onwards. It is not compatible with older cable-based Motocaddy buggies.

What does the battery chemistry mean for me?

The ULTRA uses Lithium Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, which is more thermally stable and longer-lasting than standard Lithium-ion batteries. In practical terms, it means a safer battery that holds its capacity well over hundreds of charge cycles.

Can I charge it overnight?

The BMS protects against overcharging, but we recommend switching off at the wall and unplugging it once the green light shows. There's no need to leave it connected.

My battery meter on the handle looks wrong. What should I check first?

Check the battery setting on your buggy handle. For the ULTRA battery, set it to 26V (blue/black connector). This is the most common cause of an incorrect battery reading and is easy to fix in the handle menu.

How long will the battery last?

With proper care, a Motocaddy ULTRA Lithium battery lasts up to five times longer than a comparable lead-acid battery. The exact number of charge cycles will vary depending on usage, but regular recharging after every round and correct off-season storage are the two biggest factors in maximising longevity.

What happens if the battery gets submerged in water?

Do not attempt to open the battery casing, this will void your warranty and can be potentially dangerous. Discontinue use and contact Motocaddy Australia or one of our preferred service agents for assistance.

While ULTRA batteries have waterproof casing, this protects the battery cells during typical rainfall, not when submerged. We do not recommend cleaning your battery with water, wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
