Australia's Electric Buggy Boom: What the Data Tells Us

Motocaddy has released Australia's first-ever dedicated electric buggy market report, and the numbers might well change how you think about your next round.

We've always believed that walking the course is one of golf's greatest pleasures. Now, for the first time, there's data to back it up. The Motocaddy Report is a comprehensive 36-page deep dive into the electric buggy market, both here in Australia and across the world's leading golf nations, and the findings are compelling reading for any golfer who's ever considered making the switch.

A Market on the Move

The global electric buggy market is forecast to reach AU$393 million by 2030. That's a projected 49% rise since 2023. - growth driven by a perfect storm of factors: a worldwide golf boom, younger and more fitness-conscious players entering the game, and rapid advances in buggy technology making these products easier and more enjoyable to use than ever before.

Here in Australia, that momentum is unmistakable. Golf in Australia recorded five consecutive years of club membership growth in 2024, and demand for electric buggies has doubled in the last five years. The Australian golfer isn't just playing more... they're choosing to walk more, and choosing smarter ways to do it.

What Golfers Are Saying

The report draws on insights from nearly 10,000 golfers across nine major golf-playing nations. Some of the findings are particularly striking:

  • 76% of electric buggy users say they feel fitter as a result of using one
  • 68% say they enjoy the game more when using a motorised buggy
  • 71% say having more energy to hit the ball better is the key benefit, making it as much a performance tool as a convenience
  • Over 50% say using a buggy encourages them to play more golf
  • Nearly 1 in 5 (22%) wish they'd made the switch sooner

These aren't marginal gains. These are golfers reporting a fundamentally better experience on course - physically, mentally, and competitively.

Walk More, Play Better

The shift toward walking is one of the most significant trends reshaping the modern game. During the COVID-19 pandemic, riding in shared carts became less appealing, and many golfers rediscovered the rhythm of walking 18 holes. That habit has stuck.

Push buggies currently remain the most popular option for Australian golfers (60%), which makes sense given our warm climate and courses. But the appetite for electric is growing fast! Close to a third of Australian golfers (30%) say they would be very or quite likely to rent an electric buggy if one were available to them.

For those who've already made the move to electric, the preference is clear: remote-control models are the standout choice for Australian golfers. This aligns with Motocaddy Australia's own sales data, with the hands-free REMOTE range accounting for 87% of total units sold since the brand's direct launch here in September 2025.

Technology Is Driving the Shift

As Motocaddy CEO John Helas puts it:

"Technological innovation is playing a major role. Today's electric buggies feature longer-lasting batteries, intuitive remote controls, and sleek, lightweight designs that make them easier to use and more enjoyable to own."

That innovation is part of why Motocaddy is already the second-most considered electric buggy brand in Australia, within just eight months since launching direct-to-consumer here. Globally, Motocaddy ranks as the most considered powered buggy brand in the UK, USA, Ireland and France, and among the top three in Canada and Germany.
